People Reverend Don Hawks Biography Don Hawks is ordained as an Elder in the United Methodist Church. Previous appointments in the United Methodist Church include in the Alabama-West Florida Conference: Poplar Head, RedHill-Bethlehem; and in the Virginia Conference: Pleasant Grove-Ottobine, Keezletown, Scottsville, Bethany (Harrisonburg), and Bridgewater. Don’s background in systems thinking has influenced his mission and vision-driven leadership style. He studied under Ed Friedman (disciple of Murray Bowen) for 10 years and has been trained in the nationally recognized consultation programs Healthy Congregations and Bridgebuilder. Pastor Don has also been influenced by the book “The Purpose Driven Church” by Rick Warren, particularly the emphasis on the importance of congregational mission and vision. He sees himself as one who is continually learning and likes to experiment with new ways of doing ministry. Pastor Don believes that church experiences are “mini-labs” for people to live their lives in the everyday world. In summary, he is committed to giving the congregations he serves a vision for living out the Great Commandment and the Great Commission of Jesus. Pastor Don has also worked in the mental health industry. He is a licensed marriage and family therapist, and serves as an advisor to the Clinical Pastoral Education program at Eastern Mennonite University. In the past he also served on various Conference and District programs. On occasion, Don also serves as a congregational consultant to churches in transition and conflict. He is also currently receiving on-going training as a Transitional Interim Ministry Specialist in the United Methodist Church. Earlier in his career, Don also worked as a radio announcer at a public radio station. Don is married to Robin, a school psychologist and professional counselor. They have one son who is married and 2 granddaughters, ages 4 and 1 ˝ years. Education: AA Bluefield College BA Carson-Newman College MA Radford University (Psychology) MDiv Union Theological Seminary (Virginia) Post-graduate work at Troy State University (Alabama) Hobbies: Travel, reading, learning new computer and multi-media technology, spending time with “seekers”, walking, hanging-out in coffee shops and chatting with people, going to good restaurants, movies, attending conferences and seminars, listening to contemporary jazz, praise and worship music, downloading and listening to podcasts of other sermons and worship services of various theological persuasions, learning from viewpoints that he might even disagree with, and Sunday dinners with family.
