CHURCH COUNCIL: The purpose of the church council is to plan a program of nurture, outreach, and witness; implement the plan; provide an administrative infrastructure; align the plan with the mission of the church; evaluate the effectiveness of the plan; act as the administrative agency of the charge conference. The church council exists to create a strategic plan for a local congregation. Therefore, its primary work is one of leadership rather than management.
CHARGE CONFERENCE: The charge conference is the basic governing body of each United Methodist local church and is composed of all members of the church council. All members of the charge conference must be members of the local church. The charge conference must meet at least once per year. The charge conference directs the work of the church and gives general oversight to the church council, reviews and evaluates the mission and ministry of the church, sets salaries for the pastor and staff, elects the members of the church council, and recommends candidates for ordained ministry.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES: The board of trustees supervises and maintains all property belonging to our congregation so that the ministries of the congregation can be effective. The committee is entrusted to see to the proper keeping of God's house as a way to honor God and to facilitate the ministry of the local church.
COMMITTEE ON FINANCE: The job of this group is to identify, perfect, and manage the finance system for the congregation. The finance system is the processes of raising, managing, and dispersing the finances so that the mission and vision of the congregation can be achieved.
ENDOWMENT COMMITTEE: By action of the 2008 Charge Conference this committee has been given the power, duty, and authority to receive, administer, and invest bequests, trusts, and trust funds to the church and shall do so in the case of bequests, trusts, or trust funds for which the donor has designated the committee or the local church to receive, administer, or invest the same.
COMMITTEE ON LAY LEADERSHIP AND DEVELOPMENT: This is the team that serves throughout the year to guide the church council on matters regarding the lay leadership (other than employed staff) of the congregation. Under the direction of the Pastor who chairs the team, this group matches potential leaders with leadership positions and invites persons to serve in those positions, making sure that these persons represent the makeup of the congregation.
STAFF/PASTOR PARISH RELATIONS COMMITTEE: This committee relates to all staff, both bishop-appointed staff and employed staff. It has primary responsibility to work with staff so that the mission of the church is realized. (Note: The United Methodist Church has an appointive system rather than a call system for clergy leadership.)
OAKTON CHRISTIAN PRESCHOOL BOARD: The Board assists the director of this ministry in fostering children’s competence in dealing with life and encouraging development of emotional, social, cognitive, and spiritual lives of the children enrolled in the program.
WITNESS MINISTRY: gives attention to developing and strengthening evangelistic efforts of sharing of personal and congregational stories of Christian experience, faith, and service; communications; Lay Speaking Ministries; and other means that give expressions of witness for Jesus Christ.
OUTREACH MINISTRY: gives attention to local and larger community ministries of compassion, justice, and advocacy.
NURTURING MINISTRY: gives attention to education, Christian formation, membership care, small groups, and stewardship. Consideration is given to the needs of both individuals and families of all ages.
WORSHIP MINISTRY: assists the pastor in discharging his responsibility “to preach the Word of God, lead in worship, read and teach the Scriptures and engage the people in study and witness.” This team also recruits volunteers for Sunday and other special services to assist the pastor and the music director in planning for and preparing the worship services.
STEPHEN MINISTRY: gives one to one Christian care in a spiritual context to individuals experiencing a wide variety of crises or life challenges.
UNITED METHODIST MEN: a core group of men inviting and initiating spiritual growth opportunities for all men of the church.
UNITED METHODIST WOMEN: a community of women whose purpose is--To know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ, to develop a creative supportive fellowship for all women of the church, and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.
