Ministry Fair Introduces Service Options
On Sunday, October 18th, Oakton United Methodist Church conducted its first Ministry Fair. If you’re unfamiliar with what a Ministry Fair is; it’s a lot like a job fair. Except, instead of finding a room full of employers standing behind tables talking about their job openings you have representatives from the church showcasing what their ministries do. And instead of job applicants, you have church members and guests who walk from table to table to exploring where their gifts and talents might be best applied to the ministries of the church.
The idea of conducting a Ministry Fair was initiated by Pastor Don and quickly became an integral part of our fall reCONNECT initiative. According to Pastor Don, “The purpose of the Ministry Fair and building tour is to assist attendees and members who are generally only part of the “crowd” on Sunday morning to see what goes on besides the Sunday services. My prayer is that it will help people to become more involved in the ministry worship program that began in September.”
The Ministry Fair brought together representatives from many of the various ministry areas and administrative committees within the church. In addition to answering questions about what each area does and the various volunteer opportunities available, they also distributed copies of the “Leadership Discovery” booklet that provides brief descriptions of each ministry area. Sign-up forms were also available so representatives could follow-up with those who expressed an interest in learning more or volunteering.
Of course, you don’t need to wait until the next Ministry Fair to volunteer. If you have a specific interest, contact the ministry leader for that area. If you’re unsure where you’re time and talents are best applied, contact the church office or send an email. A number of important leadership roles for 2010 are still available.
