Katrina Mission Trip 2008
Upon arriving at Gulfside Assembly, on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, several signs greet visitors. One in particular, however, posted by the Mississippi United Methodist Disaster Response Center is a sign of mission and hope. Established in 2005, the Mississippi United Methodist Disaster Response Center aids Katrina recovery efforts through the healing of hearts and homes along the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and Gulfside Assembly is a gathering place for volunteers who travel to Mississippi to assist in the recovery and rebuilding of this community. In late January 2008, a mission team of 19 volunteers from Oakton Church, traveled to Waveland, Mississippi for a week of rebuilding. In addition to giving a week of their time and the use of their talents (the team includes both those skilled and unskilled in construction), volunteers paid their own way to Mississippi and made a donation to “Camp Gulfside” where they were housed and fed. Additionally, many brought along their own tools and dug into their own wallets to purchase necessary building supplies.
Joining about thirty other volunteers—ages 14 to 84—from Methodist Churches in Harrisburg, PA and Radford, VA eight teams of workers departed camp each morning at day break to help the area’s survivors in their grueling struggle to rebuild. Over a five day period, the team from OUMC logged more than 700 hours of volunteer labor as we worked on rebuilding five homes and “Camp Gulfside”, the makeshift dormitory where we were housed. Although at times our physical mission seemed impossible, we never lost Christian compassion for the people of the Gulf coast.

Members of OUMC’s mission team included: Dan Boyd, Bryan Deege, Mark Fahner, Phil and Kimiko Hannum, Gary Heal and Nancy Ririe, Lynne and Jim Hoy, Dick Javins, Dave Jones, Benny and Mark Leonard, Ian Markley, John and Joanne Plummer, Jim and Jessie Prentice, and Jill Ririe.
In addition to the volunteers, many of our church friends and members were also able to join in our mission work. Your prayers for the volunteers and homeowners were answered as was our request for financial support. Contributions in excess of $3,000 allowed the mission team to purchase incidental building materials and consumable supplies. Thank you all for your service to God and his people.
